Steel is one of the largest costs on most building projects, and a late delivery can stop a whole site. Whether you are building a villa, running a fabrication workshop or managing a commercial project, the supplier you choose affects your budget, your schedule and the quality of the finished structure.

Here are seven things to check before you place an order with a steel company in Jeddah.

1. Does the steel meet recognised standards?

Ask which standards the steel is produced to. Reinforcement bars in Saudi Arabia are commonly supplied to ASTM A615 and BS 4449, and Saudi mills such as Western Steel produce to these standards. A good supplier can tell you the grade and standard for every product and provide mill certificates when your consultant asks for them.

If a supplier cannot tell you where the steel was made or which standard it meets, treat that as a warning sign.

2. Do they stock what you need, in the sizes you need?

Most projects need more than rebar. You may also need:

A supplier that stocks the full range saves you from chasing several shops and paying for several deliveries.

3. Can they supply the rest of the job too?

Steel rarely arrives on site alone. The same project usually needs plywood for formwork, waterproofing for the foundations and roof, adhesives and grout for finishing, and tools and hardware throughout. Buying from one supplier that carries wood, waterproofing, electrical and tools means one quote, one invoice and fewer delivery trips.

4. How fast and how far do they deliver?

Ask where the warehouse is, how quickly orders leave, and which areas they cover. In Jeddah, a supplier with local stock can usually deliver within days. If your project is in Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh or the Eastern Province, confirm delivery to those cities before ordering.

5. How quickly can you get a price?

Steel prices move with the market, so a quote from last month may not hold today. A supplier who replies with a clear price on the same day, ideally on WhatsApp where you can send your list and drawings, saves real time. Check that the quote shows the size, grade, quantity, unit price, delivery and VAT.

6. Are the details clear and consistent?

Check the supplier's website and listings. A real business shows its address, phone number, working hours and product range clearly, and the same details appear on its Google Business Profile and directory listings. Clear product pages with specifications are a good sign that the supplier knows its stock.

7. Do they help with technical questions?

Not every buyer is an engineer. A good supplier will help you match a product to the job, for example the right grout for machine bases or the right primer before a waterproofing membrane, and will tell you when something is not suitable.
